Building Partnerships within the communities

We were very thrilled recently to hear that one of the photos we submitted to the AVI Returned Volunteers Photographic Competition was a Runner Up in the Partnerships Category!  There is some fantastic work being done by volunteers all over the world!

For our photo, taken by our amazing friend Shirley Somono, there is a little story that goes with it:

One of the most rewarding aspects of our twelve month placement in Ghana was the assistance we were able to provide to the Dakpinyilli community. I first came across this community whilst out doing work with my organisation, the Rural Media Network (RUMNET) and interviewing a local community leader. My partner Mark and I were able to help the community build a much needed shelter where the food for the school children could be prepared in a more hygienic area, and the children could eat in the shade, rather than in the sweltering sun or pouring rain. This photo was taken at the official opening of the building, and we were very honoured to receive traditional “fugus” which we are wearing in the photo. The others in the photo are the village chief and elders, as well as some of the parents who also helped to build this shelter for the community.
