Mar(k): Travel, Hiking, and "Doing Good"

musings on our life of travel and volunteering

A sign of the (Ghanaian) times….

One of the more interesting aspects of consumer marketing here in Ghana, is the strong focus that God / Allah plays in the selling of pretty much every kind of good and service imaginable.  The local “beauty salon” across from our house is the “Allah is my shelter” beauty salon.  We regularly dine at “God’s Gift” chop bar, and here we have picture of the “God is Able” Special Rice place.

Even our purchases can have a religious bent.  We enjoy these pseudo-shortbread biscuits occasionally.  Made by the Hand of God Catering Company, we reckon they MUST be good!

Another interesting observation is that signs need to cater for all people; and here, there are a huge percentage of folks who are illiterate.  Accordingly, the signs need to advertise quite obviously what the shop is selling.  So it is not uncommon for a “chop bar” to have pictures of chickens, cows, goats and eggs decorated around the outside;  this lets folks know what is available inside!   Here are some other examples of the blantant use of signage.  Our friends Charlotte and Fati are standing in front of a (closed) shop that sells the ubiquitous tomato paste and pasta.

Near by was the “Happy Soundz and Hair Cut” place;  an interesting combination of music and coiffure.

Most impressive to us was the uncanny ability of *someone* to be able to predict, down to the day, when Judgement Day is coming.  To ensure that everyone is aware, this large billboard is located at the main crossroads in Tamale, right at the Tamale market.  Note the date in your diary, everyone!

mark the dates on your calendar, everyone. Word is out!

Finally, we were bemused on a bus trip recently to note that “Preaching and Selling” was prohibited on the bus.  Obviously enough of a problem that they had some very professional signs made up to discourage would be evangelists…..
