musings on our life of travel and volunteering

An Evening with Royalty….

with 2 comments

Saturday night we were delighted to be invited out for dinner to the home of another VSO volunteer; Rona from the Philippines. She and her Filipino colleague Flora had gone to a lot of trouble cooking a veritable feast for us and several others.

Among the guests was a real princess! – a colleague of Flora’s, who is the daughter of the chief of one of the local villages. As the first born, this lady will eventually end up as the “Queen Mother”, provided she lives long enough!! We didn’t expect to come all the way to Tamale to be dining with royalty!

Flora and Rona are full of energy, and have initiated an adult literacy class for the women’s group that they work with. Their first task, which proved quite challenging, was teaching the elderly women how to draw straight lines, in preparation for writing letters. The enthusiasm of the women is contagious, and the pilot project thus far seems to be a big success.

We laughed at some of the stories; elderly women squabbling over crayons (like children), and cheating by rotating the paper, so their vertical lines were horizontal, rather than undertake the challenge of drawing horizontal lines!

Rona and Flora are organizing a fundraising event for Christmas amongst some schools. The objective is to provide toilet facilities to the winning school (believe it or not, many schools in this part of Ghana are without such facilities). They have already put the request in for Mark to be Father Christmas. Mar politely declined the opportunity to be “Mary”, and is hoping to get a bit part as either an angel or a sheep. Baaaaahhhh humbug! Stay tuned, as we may be calling on your generosity for this worthy event.

  1. Hi guys. It’s been great following your adventures via your blog. Love the photos and Mar you are still looking stylish even in volly clothing! Great to hear that you have met royalty… you do move in exalted circles… 😉 Just imagine next year in Ghana when the 2010 World Cup will be on and watch the country go crazy! Seriously though, keep up the good work that you are doing. I look forward to hearing more news.
